Saying goodbye to someone who is dying.

LISTEN:

When someone you love is dying

And you’re trying to say goodbye

Feels like this happened before.

Here I am and there you are

Apart but not that far,

Apart but still together at the core.

Galaxies swirl. Cosmos unfurls.

The one I love and I

know how to rise into the world.

Rising like the tide, the waves keep rolling to the shore.

But life becomes a bore. My person is a chore.

Millions and millions and millions of years, stuck inside one never-ending tour?

Every person ends, but you and I are at the core.

Living little lives is the best we could hope for.

Here you are again! This time I love you even more.

You’re not going anywhere.  Where is there to go?

We rise into this world, self and other together,

I’ve loved you before, long ago and now more recently.

We always stay together. We travel the same road.

Laughing like children, little boys and girls.

The one I love and I know how to rise into the world.

Let’s be here together now. This is what life is like.

You’ve always been here, and you’re not going anywhere.

I am Santa. AMA on Christmas Day. [FREELANCER CHURCH]

I have wi-fi in my sleigh.
‘Twas a gift from my Mrs.,
My merry old spouse,
After we’d been conferring
About our social media accounts
About the importance of brand awareness,
Strong web presence,
And audience engagement
With the elves making presents.
So I’m LIVE muther effers,
Unlike Jean Piaget,
Let’s get this interview underway,
But before you hear all the festive stuff I have to say
Let’s get a few preliminaries out-of-the-way.
I don’t answer sex questions, and trolls go away!
So lets hear your questions,
Ho ho ho,
(And before you ask, YES, I’m a bernie bro.)
There are no foolish questions, there’s no harm in asking.
Today’s busy but I’m adept at multitasking,
Plus I have magic, and it’s Christmas today,
My name’s nick, I’m 1,750 years old, AMA.

What is “web presence” & why is it important for my brand?

Search Google for the name of your brand. Do you see any of your blogposts or social media accounts on the first page of the search results?  That’s your web presence.

When people search for your name or the name of your business, we want them to see a lot of impressive search results.

I struggled as a freelancer, doing work subcontracted to me by brands that had found the way to get the conversions, get the gigs, and source them to people like me who didn’t know how to get gigs.

But at some point, I understood the way to build web ‘presence’ and use it to get clients. I needed to stop thinking about what search terms my audiences used when searching for services like the ones I offer, and for a moment think about what they see when they search for my brand name.

Here’s my method:

Publish content using your brand name, and then tell people to search for your brand name.

Step 1. Start a blog, and the name of the blog should be the name of your business or brand. Spend a few weeks to publish blogposts with useful information for your audience.  Start a FB Business page and other social media accounts, and use your brand name in the titles of all those pages.  Be sure to include a YouTube account, and you can use screencast-o-matic to make some videos.

Step 2. Post a few classified ads in the places where people look when they want to hire someone like you.  Reddit? Craigslist? Yelp? Thumbtack? Angie’s List? Upwork? Guru?  Those sites are all good for helping you sell services you offer.  If you sell products, then make listings on the sites where people search for those products.  Maybe it’s Amazon, but if you’re on point with your Amazon game you can get a lot of buyers to start doing business with you directly rather than through Amazon.  Now here’s the important part:  Make sure your classified ad or item listing includes your brand name.  Include this sentence:  Check out my brand, “NAMEOFBRAND”, with a google search!

If you use this strategy, your clientele will quickly grow.

Why it works:

When you tell them to search Google for your brand, it makes them feel curious. They see you enthusiastically suggest that they check out your brand with a Google search, and of course they like this idea.  It’s smart to research a seller before spending money.  Plus, you have peaked their curiosity – “Why do they want me to search for the brand name?  What is it they want me to see?”  But as soon as they search for your brand name, it’s a done deal.  They are very likely to choose you and try your products and services.

Checking out your brand with a search makes the person more invested in doing business with you. It’s easy for someone to do a quick google search for your brand name, but in the moment they spend to search for it they are investing more time – becoming more psychologically invested in doing business with you. They’re only going to spend a limited amount of time trying to choose from among you and your competitors, so it’s kind of a big deal if they spend a few extra moments thinking about you.

Checking out your brand with a search also establishes a “contract” in the person’s mind.   If they decide to check out your brand with a search, it means they’re considering you and planning to based their decision on whether the search results seem impressive or not. You have already published smart blog posts and video content, and you have a few social media accounts for your brand, so it’s clear you are the real deal.  At that point, it wouldn’t’ make sense for them not to try your brand.

How to help a client complete a manuscript

Part One:

Part Two:

TRANSCRIPT:

Want to know how to help someone complete their manuscript? You CAN’T.  It’s THEIR manuscript. What you can do instead is let them hire you to create content about their content, and help them create a brand around it.  This will get them a following and help them stay focused on the manuscript while they complete it.

I’m part of a small team of writers from Boston. We created the brands called FreelancerChurch and BossContent. I’m sharing this insight I gained after 10 years as a freelance writer-for-hire. There are two types of people interested in getting a writer to help with a manuscript:  1.) People who don’t care about the manuscript and just want the money and prestige that can come from it (YES, it’s okay to let this person hire you to complete a manuscript), and 2.) People with a story or idea they want to share, and they feel passionate about sharing it (NO, do not let this person hire you to write).

I don’t usually like to be hired by someone who is the author of a manuscripts/story idea they feel passionate about: Trying to ghostwrite or co-author someone’s story is a terrible gig, run away, it’s not safe here.  They are the author, not you.  No matter how un-talented they are as writers, this is their story to share.  They might think they want you to write it for them, but they don’t.  You will end up staying available for them, keeping room in your schedule, and then you just go back-and-forth with them discussing the project forever, locked in a go-nowhere exchange of ideas.  You are part of the author’s procrastination! You’re part of their circuitous creative process!  Run away.

You get hired to try to read the client’s mind and inevitably write something based on your own idea rather than his malformed, incomplete idea, and then have him hold you hostage listening to him try to explain so you can get it right this time.  My income depends on whether he decides that he and I have adequateness discussed his idea, and I can’t make any money until he decides to let the project go forward!  I would only accept this kind of gig from a high profile or corporate client who would pay a huge amount of money.

In this case, the way to help the client is to teach them how to succeed.  And let them hire you to help them build web presence for themselves and accumulate a following while they finish their own manuscript.

What they really want to do is have you as a “muse”, so let them hire you as such!  You can promote them on social media and let them consult with you every week, or every month, about making incremental progress to build their brand and move their thinking along until the pending manuscript and even additional manuscripts – are complete.

I was discussing this stuff with the owner of CrowdTheCause.com, Kerry Walters, and she observed, many people believe success with a manuscript is this complicated crazy thing you have to know only people in Hollywood to pull it off.   I think those people are correct, to some extent.  Not that you need to know someone in Hollywood, but that you need to build your own brand FIRST instead of waiting for it to take off magically due to how brilliant your manuscript will be when it’s complete.  We can help the client become a mini-celebrity by creating excellent content online.  Encourage the author to become a mini-celebrity by blogging about the thing they want to write about.

My suggestion to any client with an unfinished manuscript is to start creating social media pages and some kind of blog or website.  Start telling the story for free, because if it’s as good as we hope it is, people will be willing to convert to some kind of sale even after reading just some small part of it.  Lots of people will follow you if it’s a good story, or good content. We can release one little chapter each week, and each week there’s an opportunity for readers to convert to some kind of purchase.

Kerry also observed that people sometimes want to keep their story or idea a secret because they don’t want anyone to use it before they finish their manuscript.  Instead, I tell me clients to give it away for free.  But leave plenty of opportunities for readers to convert to sales.  Lets say for example you turn your story into a series to which people can subscribe.  Like a newsletter.  But rather than an email newsletter you could do something to interact with them via social media.

It’s even possible to “blog a book” in the form of a FB Group!  So this is what I mean when I talk about letting new technology tools replace the traditional formats for books and other media. I could start a fb Group and change the settings so I’m the only one who is allowed to post, and then I would just blog my story.  People would see one little section come up in their feed each week. No one is allowed to even comment. It’s like a book, or series, that they receive only one installment at a time.

But of course it’s only fun to blog a book if you have people who will read it. So that is why I think the best thing to do is build a brand.  The reason I build brands is because I believe brand building is the correct way for modern people to be writers.

If you have an idea that is actually good, you’ll be able to express it in an inspired way.

If you do express a good idea in an inspired way, you can accumulate a following on social media.

When you have a following, you can blog a book and give plenty of conversion mechanisms to let readers buy something or subscribe to something, etc. A conversion mechanism is anything that gives the reader an opportunity to spend some money.  Buy another book, buy a companion audio file, make a donation, subscribe to your community for a fee, etc.

Each week you improve your content, and more people follow you, and you make your book perfect but it’s in the form of a blog.

All the while, you’re also having spells of creativity for another little ebook you’re writing.  It’ll be short and full of useful information. And people who are reading your story for free will see lots of opportunities to buy your other book that you’re selling.  So that’s what I mean by a conversion mechanism.  You think you have a manuscript that really is interesting, start publishing it one-piece-at-a-time for free and if it’s as good as you think it is, people will follow it when it’s available free.  And when you start to blog a book for free, all of a sudden you think of lots of places where you could show readers a PAY NOW button.

The artist can’t hire another person to finish having the idea and express it.  And the artist definitely must not fall into the trap of trying to keep the idea hidden.  That’s why it’s so important to give it away for free.

With some creativity, it’s possible to have many conversions mechanisms along the way.  For example: Rather than try to publish my book and get a few dollars for everyone who buys it, I can blog my book every week for 6 months!  And every week my readers will see a new call to action, directing them to a page where they can convert to some kind of sale.  It can be to order a service, or buy one of my other books, or even buy an affiliate’s book, or anything like that.  Any kind of conversion mechanism.

  • Publishing a manuscript in some traditional format, like through a book publishing company, gets you a few bucks per reader, and it gets you the glory of sharing your story.
  • Blogging your story also gets you the glory, maybe even more glory.  And it makes it possible to get a few bucks many, many times + you build so much valuable content online.

Ever heard the advertising wisdom that says people need to see an advertisement 7 times before they’ll open their wallets? And that’s for stuff they actually like and want.  Even though it’s something they want, they still don’t do anything until you show it to them 7 times!  So that is another reason it’s great to give away your best stuff for free, a little each week.  Each reader will spend some money, sooner or later. Maybe some won’t, but others will spend money more than once.

It’s hard for a reader to know they want to buy a book. On the other hand, it’s easy to follow a free video blog, or a free audio blog, and then if they really like it you might want to spend some money just to show some support.

Even if it’s an excellent story that will catch on — it can’t catch on if no one reads about it in the first place.  I’ll even go a step further and say no one will ever read a BOOK even if you give it away for free, because people are busy and overloaded with content already.  They know they don’t have time to read a whole book.  If we ever want them to read it, we need to stab them in the face with just one small part of it, maybe just one chapter or an excerpt.

If someone has a story to tell, they need to do it strategically.  They should keep in mind the way a person’s attention works.  The reader will receive one idea, and if that idea is compelling enough she will decide to look a little further.  We must NOT try to get a human to commit to reading a whole book unless we compel her or him with a small little bite-sized blurb.

I think it’s good if we can express the idea of our story in the fewest possible words.  No unnecessary words.  Sometimes someone will extend something over the course of a 100+page manuscript for no reason other than because s/he had the idea to turn it into a “book.” But for any story, or nonfiction, or a true story — a blog is excellent.  And even better than a blog is some kind of unconventional alternative to a blog.

Seems like at this moment the big thing is live events.  You can go on FB and schedule a Live Event easily.  I could imagine a creative person having a lot of success by hosting a live event each week and having the event become the content for the product they sell.

Imagine this: You work on your manuscript a little each week and then at the end of the week do a live event on FB where your followers can see the progress you made.  And the theme can be about getting them to finish their manuscripts.

If you give away your story for free a little each week, maybe even including some live events, and some video content and some audio content, and if you actively promote it — then maybe it will accumulate a big following.  Maybe one particular weekly installment will go viral and get to the front page of Reddit, and that will cause people to want to read/see/hear the rest of the story.

Did you know that when you try to get a book published the publishing company wants to know if there is an established audience for the book and whether there seems to be a niche in the market?  So even if you want to publish a book the old fashioned way with a publisher, you still have to try to establish some kind of following in order to get them to accept it.

Here’s what I tell me clients:

Publish the story to the internet a little each week.  This will give you the motivation to actually bring it to completion and start sharing it with people.  Sharing a little each week will also make it possible for people to consume it, because modern people don’t often stop to read a whole book all at once.  You can monetize it more this way than you could by getting it published and getting royalties.

Instead of selling a book by getting an agent and getting picked up by a publishing company (that’s so 1990!), I think someone with a great story to tell can tell it in a clever way using awesome new social media tools. Or even a website based on the story. Tell the story in a clever way that might get people’s attention and really go a little viral.  Direct all that readership traffic to a page where they can join you FB group, or follow you, or buy your other products, etc., and build a big following.

For example, if you’re willing to share your story you can share it for free, or share a big part of it for free and really promote that part of it.  Get people to spread the content around like COVID-19 at a trump rally, spread it all around for free.  But within the content there are exciting calls-to-action for them to spend some money.

It’s possible to share stories in dynamic, unconventional new ways.

Get your clients to hire you for content marketing, social media promotion, web design, logo design, etc. to help them build their brand based on the story or ideas they want to share. But don’t steal their opportunity to struggle and develop themselves as artists.  Don’t let them hire you to complete their idea, even though they think that’s what they want to do.

When I have a client who wants to complete a manuscript, I invite them to join FreelancerChurch, so they can get some free stuff + they can get started promoting themselves.  They’ll end up blogging, and a blog can become a book.

If the story becomes popular, it will become its own brand automatically, anyway.  So make it into a brand right now.

It turns out that her manuscript was never the thing she needed to promote.  Instead, it was herself, her own personal brand, that she needed to promote. It’s backwards to think the client needs to work hard and promote her manuscript. Instead, the manuscript is what catches people’s attention and sends traffic to her page. She thought she was promoting a manuscript, but soon she realizes the manuscript is promoting her!

If the client’s idea really is interesting enough to become popular, I can help the client make that happen through social media. When the client has a big following, she’ll be like a mini-celebrity, a rising star with a big enough following that the publishing companies will actually take interest in her!  But by that time, she won’t even need them anymore.  Her online brand is all the publicity she needs, and it’s continuing to grow.

The “Conversation Starter” Service

It’s extremely fun to promote your own brand.  All you need is an idea, and we’ll suggest names for the brand, logo designs, and other stuff.

Web design: Most web designers charge thousands of dollars for a business website https://www.freshbooks.com/hub/estimates/how-much-do-web-designers-charge, but you and our other clients can have one for only three payments of $169 (very basic, extra features can be added for more money).

Promotion: We also publish promotional content (i.e. content marketing) to “start a conversation about your brand” for about 50% of the price you pay if you order the same service through Godaddy.

If you don’t need a professional business url, it’s possible to just use your LinkedIn profile as your web page or design your own page with a free blog or web design service.  But I was not able to do that. I couldn’t focus my mind on how my websites should look.  It was a big step forward for us when we hired great web designers and content/social media managers to improve our cheesy, unprofessional web presence.  That’s when our business really got going.  So I believe in this service we offer, and I think it can help my clients achieve their goals.

The “Conversation Starter” Service

A brand is made out of content that we publish to the internet. If you want to brand yourself professionally, or get people to notice your music or art, or your professional portfolio, it helps a LOT to have us publish some content about you.

A team of writers from Boston created brands called BossContent & FreelancerChurch. We promote great ideas and create our own careers. We make ends meet by doing work we like.

And we offer this very flexible service for 169 per week.  It’s called the “Conversation Starter” Service.  Let’s start a conversation about your brand.  You can pay 169 per week for 3 weeks and see some great progress to promote your brand, or build a website.

We tailor the service to whatever you need.

One option is to use the Conversation Starter service to have s build a simple website for yourself or your brand.  Most web designers charge thousands of dollars for a business website https://www.freshbooks.com/hub/estimates/how-much-do-web-designers-charge, but you and our other clients can have one for only 3 payments of $169 (very basic, extra features can be added for more money).

For some small extra amount, we can provide hosting, SSL certificate, a professional email address, business phone number that forwards to your cell, and a other great features. So if this is a good time to create a website, let me know and I’ll set it up!

But what if you already have a website? In that case, you can use the Conversation Starter service to have us start a conversation about your brand on social media.  We’ll publish blogposts or Linkedin articles, and social media content, to get people talking about your brand.  Promotional blog posts, keyword articles, social media promotion, and advertising.

It’s okay to just stop after three weeks, and you’ll already have a lot more legitimacy for your brand.  You can hire us for this service (three payments of $169) ANY time, every month, or every 6 months, or every year – it’s a flexible kind of service.

Let’s take that first step.  Even if you’re no ready to have us start the work yet, you can email me and tell me about your goal. It’s a big step in the right direction.

I hope you’ll email me and tell me about the GOAL you’re trying to achieve. I’ll reply with some suggestions.  LetsDoIt@BossContent.net

Why start a business or brand? Everyone’s just going to die, anyway…

Why start a business or personal brand?

Everyone’s just going to die, anyway, so what’s the point…

If you are ambitious enough to be interested in branding yourself online, you’re probably also educated so much that you have already been indoctrinated into hopeless philosophical materialism.  Intelligent people tend to believe they are doomed to have their existence end when the body dies.   So, nothing really matters, and nothing has lasting significance.  But I promote brands because I believe in the conscious being that springs into existence.

Tell a friend. Tell your parents. There is no need to be nihilistic.  Scientists like Peter Russel and Rupert Sheldrake have been calling attention to their observation that consciousness seems to be more fundamental than matter.  It seems that the nature of this universe is that I exist in it.  I spring into existence.

Look, it’s a tragedy if your children and friends deeply believe in the idea that they will be annihilated when the body dies.  How can you expect them to live a normal life if that is what they believe?  And it is you who have taught them to believe in their own annihilation. You taught them by believing it yourself. Does that really seem likely to you?  Here you are.  That is what I know.

Why try to improve the world when you believe your existence will end when the body dies?  If all humanity is just pathetic little temporary beings, then what is the point?  If you believe in philosophical materialism, then what is the point? I remember when I was too young to even understand nihilism.  Hopelessness is something people don’t really understand until they succumb to it. But it’s an illusion!  And we can be the ones who help people wake up from that terrifying dream.

Let’s not be existentially naïve. Something inexplicably began existing, and it might be this conscious being. Some people arrive at an insight that human beings are all one consciousness; they feel connected with one another, and all people feel empathy toward others. There is a kind of interconnectedness, and we all are basically shaped the same, too.  We live these lives, searching for love and exploring the unknown.

We’re like one being split into multiplicity.

Philosophical materialism is an assumption that matter is what somehow started existing, and then some of it “came to life” like Frosty the Snowman.  I don’t buy it.

Philosophical materialism is the basis for the tough-minded idea that consciousness ends when the body dies.  But it is not weak-minded to consider the possibility that a conscious being is what sprang into existence.  It’s kind of ironic for a conscious being to read this and doubt the possibility of a conscious being springing into existence.

Nihilistic devotees of philosophical materialism think they represent the solemn voice of reason. They think they are correct just because the truth they choose is the most awful possibility.  They don’t realize, they are like the terrified person who makes everyone else fall into a panic.

They see clearly that there is no truth to the fairy-stories of biblical literalism, so they assume consciousness must be an accidental phenomenon.  Our grandparents were wrong to believe in a fairytale version of eternity, but that doesn’t mean we’re all doomed. Fairy-tale or doom is a false dichotomy.

Actually, the primacy of consciousness is plausible.  If you look at it honestly, you’ll agree.  Which is more likely: That a conscious being exists? (you know of at least one.) Or the notion that material is what inexplicably began existing and some of it ‘came to life’ like Frosty the Snowman?  Inorganic matter became organic matter and some of it evolved consciousness, even though evolutionary biologists can’t find any logical reason why the evolution of the universe should have ever involved any sentient, conscious awareness? Rocks could have continued colliding with one another in infinitely complex ways without any of the rocks ever taking form as human beings.

I believe in the primacy of consciousness, and I believe in the being that experiences life after life, because eternity is unfathomable. In philosophy, it’s called PHILOSOPHICAL IDEALISM, and it’s the set of assumptions that rejects philosophical materialism.  According to idealism, consciousness is a prerequisite that must exist in order for any material phenomena to exist.  There are plenty of examples to show that the human nervous system is able to perceive only a small sliver of all possible phenomena (humans cannot experience infrared, or radio waves, etc, but we know those things are all around us), so we can understand the world people experience as something constructed by their consciousness.  Consciousness exists, and it creates the world.  Physicalists/Materialists would argue that physical structures of the nervous system must exist in order for any conscious experience to be possible, but idealists would say consciousness is fundamental, and the nervous system is part of the dream.

I’m interested in improving the quality of collective human consciousness, because I think it’s MY consciousness.

Sometimes consciousness becomes like a nightmare.  People freeze to death, and torture one another, and die from preventable disease.  Other times, it becomes like heaven, sitting in a coffee shop with good music and a fast Internet connection. Everything is so nice sometimes.  Humans create either hell or heaven, and it depends on what we do in these lives we live.

The future of human consciousness is my future.  If you’re starting a brand that can brighten people’s lives, I want to work for you.

Every brand that represents work being done in an ethical way is a brand that improves the world — and improves the lives of the people who choose it over the other brands. Your brand becomes the best option for some customers or employers, so if you had not been available they would have settled for an option they didn’t like as much.  That means you’re improving people’s lives. When your brand is the best option for some people, so in that way it improves their lives.  When an employer/customer chooses my client’s brand, that means the brand had risen to a level where it was chosen over all competing brands and in that way it was the best.  It made the world a better place by being better than the other options.

In one of his lectures, Alan Watts says, “You don’t really believe — not really.” You don’t really believe, because at the current time in human history it has become fashionable for people to show their sharp intellect and strength-of-will by saying, “We are nothing but a cosmic coincidence!  Consciousness is accidental, and your existence ends when the body dies.” If anyone suggests a more optimistic possibility, that person is accused of wishful thinking.  The people with the most credibility are those tough-minded enough to assume the worst. And so, due to their credibility, the ones you believe the most are those who assume the worst.  Primitive people believed in an eternal soul centuries ago, but modern people think they know better.  Modern people think they have it all figured out.  Every generation has assumed they had it all figured out. Theologians of the late middle ages thought the ideas from the early middle ages were adorable, and just like every generation they felt smug, like they had it all figured out.

In modern times, just like every other generation, we feel like we have it all figured out.  But it’s very unlikely that this hopeless philosophical materialism is the correct way to understand reality.  We are not a very advanced civilization.  A few centuries ago, the scientific community was pretty sure the earth was the center of the universe. As recently as the 1920s, the scientific community thought the universe was static, steady, sitting in perfect stillness. In 1922 Alexander Friedmann was able to use some of Einstein’s equations to show us that the universe is expanding. Imagine how shocked and amazed they must have been to discover that it was expanding!  What madness is this if it’s expanding!

And did you know it wasn’t until the 1990s that we discovered the expansion of the universe was accelerating?  Prior to the 1990s, we had assumed the expansion was slowing down due to whatever resistance might exist out there.  But no! It seems to be expanding faster and faster? I remember a TED talk where the speaker said that would be like if you threw a ball up in the air expecting its ascent to slow and finally stop, but instead when you let go of the ball it just flies up into the sky faster and faster and faster!

So we turn our attention back to stories like Alice in Wonderland or Narnia, or the Land of Mordor, or any of that, and we realize none of it is nearly as weird as reality as it seems to actually be.  Even after mescaline and meditation and illness and love, even after experiencing something that seemed like perfect wholeness and the best of every possible world, I still stayed secretly in doubt.  But how could I continue to doubt?  Look at how obvious it is. It’s the nature of this little cluster of solar systems that I exist in it.

What does it mean to face the truth?  The body dies.  But look at how the body rose up out of this in the first place. I animated it and took form, like Terminator 2.  I am something that rises up out of the world.  You are like one of the heads on a multiheaded monster. How many heads are on this thing? How many centers are there to this thing?

See how the One splits into so many perspectives, experiencing self and other now.  See how all criticism is self-criticism and all gentleness is gentleness with oneself.  See how the powerful are the meek.  See that the person is part of the planet.  As Alan Watts observed in one of his lectures thousands of which you can find online, this planet peoples the way an apple tree apples.  Let’s not be existentially naïve. I am not the rotten fruit that falls and decomposes in the soil.

You can try to achieve lofty goals, like world peace and cures for illnesses, but you can also improve the world by making your own brand as good as it can be.  The whole point of striving for world peace and cures for illness is so that people can enjoy great products and services.  Brands like yours add interest to collective human experience.  Everyone who enjoys your work or your products will feel uplifted, because you uplift them.  And in turn, they make other people feel uplifted.  This is the way you can improve the world with a truly inspired brand.

Maybe achieving excellence for your brand seems like a very modest way to improve the world, but there is no limit to how many people you can reach if you promote your brand online.

Businesses and brands are the creative achievements that make life worth living, and they make life interesting for all the living beings. If a conscious being exists, and that being experiences life after life because eternity is unfathomable, it’s possible that our decisions in this life affect the future of our experience, even after this life is over.  The best thing we can do in this life is create a great new brand that operates in ethical ways and makes the world a little more interesting, or a little less painful, for all of us.

I don’t know for sure whether the material world is real (although physicists say subatomic particles flash in and out of existence).

Branding yourself online: It’s not all about you! (It’s about what you are all about)

What are you all about?

Branding yourself online means choosing an idea that you’re going to have people associate with you.

Isn’t that right? You can only brand yourself or your business if you give people an idea to associate with your brand. Bernie Sanders is known for standing up to corporate America; Jane Goodall is known for her research about chimpanzees; Stephen King is known for horror in his storytelling. There is more to these people than just the one idea each of them is “known for”, but the idea is what makes the brand.  No idea, no brand.

Understanding personal branding

The guiding philosophy for FreelancerChurch includes the firm belief that every professional person employed by an organization should make a natural transition into self-employment.  This doesn’t mean you need to start a business, and it doesn’t even mean you need to sell anything or do any freelance work for private clients.  Making the transition into self-employment means branding yourself online and using your skill and experience to create something new. It’s okay if you keep working as an employee for the rest of your life, as long as you have the ability to do business for yourself if you want to. And how can you gain that ability?

Begin with a meaningful idea.

The idea that is the foundation for your brand should be meaningful to you, and it should also be meaningful to the people who will be your customers and anyone you employ or affiliate with in the future.  Making your brand feel meaningful to people requires some careful consideration.  If you want to start an online store where you accept custom orders for your artwork, that is inherently meaningful to you, but how can you make it meaningful to other people? The Internet is full of websites where artists are trying to sell their work, but those websites don’t get any traffic because the artists are not promoting a meaningful idea. One of the most important ideas to consider when trying to build a brand is the idea to infuse your brand with a key idea that people can associate with it.  I call this key idea a “theme”.

Your brand needs a theme.  What are you all about?

How would you define the word ‘theme’ if a little kid asked you what that word meant? When I say your brand needs a theme, I’m talking about one big idea that is at the foundation of your brand.  Saving the planet? Improving the quality of education? Improving community health? Fighting hunger?  WELL, those are all great, but your brand can still be meaningful even if it is not aligned with such lofty goals. Uber is meaningful because it improves life for a lot of people who cannot drive cars, and it provides a realistic alternative for people who would otherwise drive home from the bar intoxicated. Even if you just want to open a pizza restaurant, you can make it meaningful by offering a great pizza recipe that isn’t available at any other pizza places in town. Providing a great product, service, or restaurant is meaningful for the same reason it is competitive in its industry: Because it gives people something they like.

Your brand is already meaningful, as long as it can make the world more interesting or enhance people’s lives in some way.  If it’s just all about exploiting people and doing harm, then maybe you don’t have such a meaningful brand.  But if you maintain ethical practices, you will be able to find the meaningful contribution associated with your brand.  If you forget about the meaningful theme and try to create a brand only with an idea to sell people products and services, that might not be the best approach. The best approach is to write some promotional content about why your idea is meaningful. Branding yourself online, you’ll inspire yourself along with everyone in your target audience.

Choose a brand name by putting two words together.

After you have identified the key idea that makes your brand meaningful, you can choose a name for your brand.  I’ll tell you how I like to come up with a name for a brand: Put two words together to make a new word, and that new word is the name of your brand. It’s a good idea to make sure your brand begins with a word that people in your target audience are likely to search.  For example, FreelancerChurch begins with the word ‘freelancer’ because I want it to be found by people interested in freelancing. What two words can you put together to express the big idea that is the foundation of your brand?

Choose two words that are not often used together. Don’t use BucklesBelt as your brand name, because those terms “buckles” and “belt” are already used together in a million different ways online. Likewise, don’t choose UniqueGifts as your brand name, because those two words are used together a lot in the Internet. If you name your brand with two words that often appear together, it will be difficult to get your content to appear on the first page of search results when people look you up with a Google search.  Instead, when branding yourself online, choose two words that are not often used together (“ReliableTutors”, “FashionNova”, “CollectiblesCorner”) you’ll come up at the top of the list when people search for your brand name.

Another reason to use two words that are not often used together is because it generates some irony.  Irony is the active ingredient in comedy, and it elicits that mysterious sound humans make when they’re amused.  “Hah! Hah hah hah.” If your brand name is even a little bit amusing, it will give people a good feeling instantly. That’s why some day I’m going to open a grocery store called ‘food yummy’.

You might write a book, or start a blog, or simply create a FB business page.  You might do some consulting work, or you might offer some other service.  You might start a Youtube channel.

You can share content in any way you prefer, and you will be branding yourself online in a meaningful way as long as you stay focused on your theme.  I work with a team of writers who created FreelancerChurch and BossContent, so this blog about personal branding is aligned perfectly with the theme for our brand. Our brand is all about creating content to help people improve their lives. It’s meaningful, because when we help people build new brands we’re making the world more interesting, strengthening the economy, and helping our clients achieve their goals.

OKAY, I guess we covered everything.  The secret is that when branding yourself online, it’s not all about you.  It’s about the IDEA that you are all about.  That’s worth thinking about.  And when you know the idea that you want people to associate with you, the next step is to identify all the ways your idea is meaningful. Then, choose a brand name that helps to express that idea.  After that, you just have to create a lot of great content about your idea. Usually, that means writing or making video content.  If you want some help, email LetsDoIt@BossContent.net and we’ll create some content for your brand full of keywords that will help you connect with the people looking for those specific things you have to offer.

Your LinkedIn profile is NOT GOOD ENOUGH (and everyone knows it!)

Everyone knows it’s not good enough to have a professionally written LinkedIn profile. That’s why they always tell you to do something that will make your LinkedIn profile “stand out”.  It’s the same advice they gave you when you were a kid writing your college admission essay, and again when you wrote your resume. So what does it mean to ‘stand out’, and why do people talk about it in such a mysterious way? You would think that with so many people encouraging you to make yourself stand out from the competition, they would mention what, specifically, you can do to stand out.

Well, there is a whole science to it.

I am very interested in the psychology of standing out, because it’s the only way anyone can ever achieve any goals.  My interest in the psychology of standing out is what got me interested in promoting businesses and brands.  Even if you don’t have a business to promote, you will need to brand yourself.  Your name becomes your brand name.  If you have not created a business or brand, then your NAME is your brand.

So let’s look at a LinkedIn profile and try to see it from the perspective of a recruiter who is browsing many profiles and trying to choose the best person for the job.

As you listen, it’s a good idea to be looking at a blank document so you can type some important ideas for improving your profile.  I’ll tell you one important idea right now, and you can type it so you remember to do it: It’s possible to modify the headline of your Linkedin profile.  So do it.

Sign into your LinkedIn account and select the option to edit profile.

First of all, it’s important to make sure you smile in your picture.  Remember that the recruiter who is browsing your profile is a sensitive human who wants to be able to feel comfortable with you.  Look like you are approachable, so the recruiter can feel comfortable recommending you to the hiring manger.  If you have a big, engaging smile on your face, it suggests that you have the kind of interpersonal skill that makes great teamwork and leadership possible.  Your smile shows that you have the kind of intrinsic charisma that some people have and others don’t.

You’ll see that if you have not edited the headline, the headline will automatically show your current job title.  Changing the headline is a good way to immediately catch the reader’s attention.

The best way to change your headline is to choose three or four search terms that recruiters are likely to use when searching for someone like you.  You can type these search terms right into your headline to improve your search visibility.  So, if you have experience in Project Management, Account Management, and Vendors Relations you can list these three skills in your headline.  Use your headline as a place for the search terms the recruiters you want to connect with are likely to use.

You can search google to find out the keywords most commonly used in your industry.  For example, if you’re a teacher you can search google for: Education, linkedin, keywords.  If you’re a nurse, you can search google for: nurse, linkedin, keywords. It only takes a few minutes to find an article with the keywords used by hiring managers in your industry.

How about your profile image? Does it look professional?  People are superficial. The image is the most important part of your LinkedIn profile.  If you don’t have an image, or if you have one that doesn’t look professional, the hiring manager will take one look at it and close the tab without reading your profile at all.

Next, you move on to your summary.  The important thing to remember with your summary is that you should not waste time with empty generalizations. Don’t say you are a detail-oriented self-starter who takes initiative. Those words don’t really mean anything.  Instead, tell a story.  Use this opportunity to mention goals you achieved. If you were a project manager, mention how many people were involved with the project.  If you helped improve profit, give some statistics.

Next, let’s talk about what you can do to show people that you are the applicant they are looking for. Demonstrating to the reader that you are the applicant they are looking for is NO simple task, because most of the time the reader does not even know what she or he is looking for! It’s true.  There are all kinds of books written about what hiring managers should look for in an applicant, but the methods any hiring manager actually uses will depend on that managers intuitive decision. Even if that hiring manager follows a set of principles for choosing the best applicant, intuition will still play a big role in the decision making process.  Intuition will be what determines the extent to which the hiring manager adheres to any set of principles for selecting the right applicant.

The correct thing for you to do is almost always the same, regardless of the kind of job for which you’re applying.  I’m going to mention something that everyone knows – some experienced managers know this because they have seen the research supporting it, and others have never seen the research but they know it intuitively. A human being’s personality traits remain mostly the same. There are some things an employee can be trained to do and other things and employee can NOT be trained to do.  In the moments when a hiring manager is browsing profiles on LinkedIn, it’s a time for thinking about the things a person can NOT be trained to do. Despite a lot of human resource management literature suggesting otherwise, the truth is that personality traits like conscientiousness and industriousness cannot be improved very much with employee development programs.  Those personality traits tend to increase as a person gets older and matures, but generally speaking it is difficult for employers to train people to improve in those areas.  Similarly, there are personality traits like empathy and extroversion which can make a person a better leader or a better salesperson, or better in any role that requires finesses in dealing with other humans.  These cannot be learned! Empathy, extroversion, industriousness, and conscientiousness are all examples of personality traits that, according to empirical research by psychologists, cannot be improved very much no matter how much time is spent trying to train an employee to improve them.

So, what conclusion can we draw? What conclusion can we draw from this observation that certain personality characteristics associated with employee productivity, are mostly permanent and cannot be improved with employee development programs?  It means a hiring manager will tend to favor the job applicants who already seem to be conscientious, empathetic toward other people, and industrious.  Every employer wants employees who are driven to work hard and do a great job. Employers want to hire people who will be able to find job satisfaction by being part of a great team. Employers want to hire someone who seems to be extremely productive, one of those people who can improve the whole company with the energy of inspiration.

So, I’ll tell you how to make yourself stand out.  What you need to do is demonstrate that you are the most driven type of person. 80% of people are ordinary, and 20% of people are hyper-productive, they are extremely effective and one person like this is worth FOUR normal people.  This is not just an idea I made up. It’s an idea that comes from the famous Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto who observed that, in his own garden, 80% of the healthy peas were produced by 20% of the peapods.  Then, he noticed that 20% of the land owners in Italy owned 80% of the land!  Researchers are constantly finding more examples of this pareto distribution, also called the pareto principle, or the 80-20 rule, and it seems to be almost a universal principle you can observe everywhere in nature. It is not always a ratio of 80 to 20, but everywhere you look you can find examples of situations where 80% of the results come from 20% of the causes.  80% of the best selling books are written by 20% of the people who write books. The point of observing this is to recognize that things are not equal.  It matters what you choose, because whenever you choose something there is a chance you can select the option that is 4 X as useful as all the other options.

What can we learn from the pareto distribution?  We learn that things are not distributed evenly.  People are highly un-equal. Your goal when writing a LinkedIn profile is to make it look the way it would look if you were one of those hyper-productive, hyper-conscientious 20% of people who get more work done than everyone else in the company.  If a hiring manager can correctly guess which employees will be extraordinarily productive, it make such a huge difference, the company is sure to do well and everyone’s work will be efficient.

That’s what you need to show the person who reads your LinkedIn profile.  And how do you demonstrate that you are one of those most productive, driven people?  I’ll tell you a few things you can do:

Buy a domain name and create a website based on your name, or your professional philosophy about the work you do, or about improving your local community… anything at all. What kind of website can you create that will enable you to use your talents to make the world a better place?  Go ahead and create it, because when you do, it will make you a more effective job applicant.  If you don’t know how to even begin creating a website, that’s okay.  All you need to do is email me at LetsDoIt@BossContent.net and tell me about your idea for a website.  I’ll take care of the rest.  We offer an 8-week program where we create a website and then promote it on social media, but you don’t have to order that whole service.  You can actually just tell me how much you want to budget for your website, and I’ll find out what we can do for that amount.  There are a lot of inexpensive ways to add a website to your LinkedIn profile.

Write an article or an e-book.  Don’t ignore this one, even if you think you suck at writing.  It’s not about the writing.  It’s about the authority.  When someone says “I wrote the book on…” one thing or another, it’s another way of saying, “I know all about it.”  If you wrote the book on something, anything at all, it shows people that you are a hyper-productive person.  Now, I don’t know if you are a hyper-productive person or not, but it doesn’t matter because I AM A HYPER PRODUCTIVE PERSON and you can hire me to write a short e-book with useful information for people in your target audience. It’s not very expensive.  You and I can co-author an e-book, and from the perspective of a hiring manager browsing your profile it’s just as good as if you had been the only author.  We can set the ebook up for digital download somewhere online, and then we can modify your resume and your LinkedIn profile so that everyone sees an entry with the title of the book you wrote. If you had the inspiration and consistency to write a book and sell it online (or you can even give it away free), if you had the focus and drive necessary for completing a project like that, it proves you are one of those top 20% best people to hire.

Join 3 professional organizations.  There are hundreds of organizations you can join easily.  Organizations need people to join.  You can join three organizations right now, and it’s probably possible to do it by filling out an online form.  Maybe you’ll need to make a small donation or something.  And this is going to sound a little bit disingenuous, but I think you should join an organization with the coolest name. I hope you’ll also join organizations that interest you, but right now we’re trying to make your LinkedIn profile stand out so let’s join some organizations that have names you want people to see when they are comparing you to other job applicants.

  • If you are a teacher, or if you are any kind of healthcare professional, or if you work for the government, there are certain issues central to the work you do right now.
  • If you’re a teacher, you know parental involvement is one of the biggest factors determining student outcomes, so you can join an organization that works to encourage more parents to get involved in the classroom.
  • If you are a nurse, you know that community health depends on how effectively you can educate the community about preventable health risks, so you join a community health organization.
  • Even if you are already a member of several organizations I encourage you to go join 3 more right now. You’ll be glad you did. List them on your resume. When you notice how easy it is to get involved with good organizations, you might joing more and more until there is a long list on your LinkedIn profile. It’s hard not to notice when someone is a member of 12 professional organizations.  You wanted to know how to make your profile stand out. That’s how to do it.

Then, go follow some companies you’d like to work for.  Find the section of linkedin where you can follow influencers and companies, and follow the companies you want to work for.  They will notice if you’re following them.

Finally, the last topic to discuss is the endorsements section of the profile.  Choose the skills that are most likely to be searched by recruiters.  Then, be bold enough to ask people to endorse you. Connect with your friends in LinkedIn and endorse one another.  Have some friends meet up to visit and endorse each other on LinkedIn. It will be a productive way to catch up with friends and colleagues, and everyone will benefit from it.

Now that you’ve listened to the ideas in this audio, you might be ready to type some keywords that are likely to be searched by recruiters, and you might be ready to think about the most important skills they will want to see on your profile. Your professionally written linkedin profile is not good enough until you have filled it with the most important keywords, search terms, and until you have taken it as an opportunity to demonstrate that you are an extraordinarily driven, productive person.  Remember that everyone intuitively knows about the pareto principle – the idea that people are not all equal, and in any industry it’s likely that 20% of employees are so productive that they are responsible for 80% of the productivity of a company. And that means recruiters will want to connect with you if you spend extra time to show that you are one of those rare people who are extraordinarily driven, inspired, and productive.  If your resume shows that you have a website, one or more publications, a long list of endorsements, and membership in several professional organizations, it will be very difficult for them to pass your profile by.  People who are extremely motivated and productive are easy to recognize because their professional profiles are full of extra things that enable them to stand out and make a stronger impression than the competition.

Introduction to Search Visibility (Typing Meditation)

To learn the best ways to improve your brand’s search visibility, you can open a blank document right now and press play on the audio below.  While you listen, you can type any important ideas you want to remember.

Everyone who wants to promote a business or brand will want to know how to get a lot of traffic to a web page or social media pages.  This typing meditation will help you improve the search visibility of your brand.

I think you should open a blank document right now, and be ready to type any ideas that arise in your mind while you listen to this audio.

You can type a sentence whenever you learn something important that you need to remember.

I’ll tell you something important right now, and you can type this in your notes:

If I want a lot of people to notice my brand, I need to write useful articles to help those people achieve their goals.

Type that in your document.  When you are trying to find the best ways to improve the search visibility of your website and social media pages, there are many different ways to answer that question.  But at the same time, there is also only one correct answer. You should be genuinely useful to the people in your target audience.

What does it mean when Internet Marketing experts say ‘content is king?’ It means the only way to make sure a lot of people will see your website and social media pages is to fill it with content that is actually useful.  Let’s think about what that means.  It may seem like commons sense, but sometimes it’s not easy to think directly about WHO are the people in your target audience and WHAT problems are they trying to solve?

Google is always trying to improve its search algorithms so that people will find the highest quality content. Do you want to work in harmony with Google, or do you want to try to work against Google? If you want to work in harmony with Google, the way to make sure your website appears in the search results is to fill your website with content that is actually useful.

It should be content that is useful for people in your target audience.  So for example, if your business is a Karate school, who is your target audience?  Maybe you will have more than one target audience. You might want to connect with adults interested in learning self-defense, but I think you will get more business if you create advertisements that will be seen by people who are looking for a karate school for their kids.

So I ask myself, what would a mom or dad search for in a google search if they were trying to decide which local karate school is best for their child?

And the answer to that is, the parent who is trying to choose a karate school is looking online to compare all the local karate schools.

He might search google for the name of the city where he lives, and “karate school”.   Therefore, it’s a good idea if your karate school website has an article that uses the name of the city where it is located.

It might seem like common sense, but it takes some time to think it through.  The parent trying to choose a karate school is likely to search google for the name of the city where the family lives and also the word ‘karate school’ so be sure to write an article that includes those search terms.

And what if you are not a good writer? No problem, that’s when you hire a content writer or social media manager.  If you don’t have a lot of money to spend, hire someone to write content for you only once each month.  Your business is either going to be effective or it’s not. So you should find the way to offer real value for your customers and that is how you get a lot of search visibility for your website.

You also need to remember, that humans are strange and their brains work in all kinds of different ways. They will search for a karate school using many different search terms.  That’s one reason why it’s important to add more and more content to your website and social media all the time.

It’s best if your website has a Blog, so you can regularly publish fresh, original content that will be useful to the people in your target audience. This is the most important way to improve your search visibility.

The next topic is keyword research:

Another way to improve your search visibility is to do keyword research. However, keyword research oversimplifies the way human beings think. It’s possible for keyword research tools to provide very sophisticated and detailed information about the existing quantitative data on what search terms people use, but only you know your specific audience, and the specific content that makes your brand unique. Because of your unique relationship to a specific target audience, it’s necessary to use a little bit of intuition when you choose keywords to use in your text content. What keywords would you search for if you wanted to buy the kinds of products or services you’re selling?

You can search Google for, Google my Business, and it will take you to https://www.google.com/business/ Get registered so that your local business will appear on Google Maps. You should also make a practice of asking your customers to write  reviews about you and post them on google reviews. This is a great way to prove that you run a trusted, local business. You can even offer something to your customers for free to thank them for taking the time to write a review.

The next topic is using social media to improve your search visibility.

Use social media to improve your search visibility

Do you understand the way google keeps track of everyone’s search activity and web browsing habits? This is easy to understand.  Google pays attention to how many people visit your page and how much time they spend on your page.  Google and other search engines have very sophisticated formulas for making sure your website will only have strong search visibility if it genuinely has content that people find useful.

So, one way to improve you search visibility is to choose your favorite social media site and go connect with some people in your target audience.  Think about the products and services you sell, and ask yourself, what kind of person needs the products and services I sell?  Where would I be if I was one of those people?

If you are a web designer, you can participate in a lot of forums, especially on reddit, where you can have interesting discussions with people who want to create websites.  Just be yourself, and talk about your intellectual interests. If you are an inspired web designer, you will be talking on social media about all the newest innovations in web design. You will be so excited about web design ideas, it will make other people feel excited, too.

The next topic is viral marketing.

Viral marketing is one of my favorite topics.  Viral marketing is simply the idea of trying to write something that would be so cool that everyone will want to share it with everyone else. For content writers, viral marketing is a little bit like when Mr. Miyagi is trying to catch the fly with chopsticks. It’s something you always try to do, and if you succeed one time you’re very happy with yourself. You can also hire people to write articles and hope they go viral.

The next topic is automation.

A moment ago, I was talking about how you can get more traffic to your webpage if you post your content to several social media platforms. The more social media platforms you use, the more people will see you’re posts. Anyone who is interested in your content might follow a link back to your website, and that kind of activity by people navigating the internet is what Google notices and uses to determine how much search visibility you have. In other words, if you want a lot of people to find your website and social media pages, provide great content. And then there are some tools you can use to make sure your content reaches as many people as possible.

One great tool I have used is blog2social. It’s the word blog and the number two and the word “social”, all one word. Search for that, and you will find the tool that automatically shares every new WordPress blog post you publish to all of your social media accounts. I used it for a while, but it took some time to learn it and then there were times when it was not very user-friendly. If you have a lot of experience with computers, you might like to use this program. Check it out. I use it until recently, and I might use it again in the future. But what I do now is hire people to publish social media content for me. If they want to use a program for automation, they can use whatever programs they like. For every dollar I spend to hire social media managers, I make $5 or more from the orders my customers place. It’s a great system if you can find effective content writers and social media managers. My favorite way to automate my social media promotion is to pay human to do it. Everything happens automatically when you hire a thoughtful creative person to promote your brand on social media.

Depending on what kind of business you’re trying to run, it might not be necessary to hire any content writers or social media managers to promote you. If you do decide to hire content writers or social media manager, you can spend a lot of money or not very much money at all. It can be quick and easy to make an arrangement with someone who will promote your brand name and send traffic to your website. But you may also choose not to hire anyone for that, and then you will just promote your own brand in your own way, part-time, without being in any hurry. Gradually, over the years your brand will become well-established and people will begin to see a lot of great search results when they search Google for your brand name.

Now you have spent a lot of time thinking about the most important ideas for improving your search visibility. Listening to this audio, there are some useful Concepts they can help you take the next steps towards success. The most important idea we’ve discussed is the idea of making sure your brand, including your website and also your social media Pages, has content that is really useful for people. If you are an educator and you want to Brand your name professionally, you should blog about your intellectual interests. If you are a neuromuscular therapist with a pain management clinic, you should blog about the most advanced research findings for various types of pain management. If you are an accountant, the people in your target audience are people who need to hire an accountant, so you should blog about all the most important ideas to keep in mind when choosing an accountant. Are you catching the idea now, you need to think like the people in your target audience.

And now it’s time to write something. You don’t have to write beautifully, it’s okay even if you just make a very useful list. Type of list of your most useful suggestions to help people achieve their goals. What goals? The goals that people in your target audience are trying to achieve. The goals that can be achieved by buying the products and services that you sell it.

Now, let’s not think about it all at once. Let’s slow down and in a few seconds this audio will end. You can sit in silence for a while and start typing a list of ideas that are truly useful for the people who need the products and services that you sell. You probably have some ideas that can save people a lot of time and help them to get the best outcomes. If your brand is all about something that you are truly interested in, then you probably have a lot of useful ideas to share. Sharing useful ideas is the key to internet marketing.

We also talked about the idea to get registered with Google my business. That’s google.com business. This is useful if you have a physical business that people can find at a real address locally. It might also be useful for people only have online business, but I think it’s more useful for people who have a physical street address.

And finally, we talked about viral marketing. You can write articles and create videos and hope one of them becomes a viral internet sensation.  Or if you want to spend a little bit more money, you can hire people to make videos that are useful for the people in your target audience. It’s probably easier to make a viral video than it is to make a viral article. Everybody likes to watch videos more than they like to read.

I hope the ideas discussed here will help you to get a deeper understanding about how to increase the number of people who will see your website in the list of search results when they are searching Google for solutions to their problems, and when they’re searching Google for people they can hire to help them achieve their goals. It might be a good idea now to listen to this audio again from the beginning, and type a list of things you can do to start building your brand, and building the search visibility of your website and social media pages. If you’d like the writers and designers at boss content. Net to do something to help promote your brand, you can email me at let’s do it at BossContent.net. we can write articles about you, create videos, and promote you on social media. The Freelance Warrior Typing Meditations

(Something to do while you procrastinate)

It’s a good idea to try the typing mediations at BossContent.net because they can help you stay focused on your goal long enough to type some useful content for your brand and take a big step forward toward success.

This particular meditation is not like the others. It’s not about any particular topic or task.  In this meditation, I hope you’ll just experiment with typing any ideas that arise in the mind.

There is no particular goal, other than to REMEMBER what is most important to you.

And that mysterious entity we call the subconscious mind….

Already knows what is most important to you

And knows how to turn it into a community of like minded people.

Already knows how to monetize it so you can make plenty of money.

The mind already knows what you should do. What should you do to build this brand? How can we add one piece to the puzzle right now?

Remember that a brand is just an idea.  Ideas are invisible!  So the only way your brand can take for is in the form of some content.

As you sit here listening, you might get some great ideas and PAUSE the audio, so you can type them.  Maybe the person will pause the audio, but this great state of mind will go on interrupted, and you can type the notes that will be come your web content and social media content.

If you are the sort of person who is open to new experiences, that’s what makes you want to create your own business or brand.  But it also means you’re the kind of person who thinks about many different things. So it’s important to use a method that locks the person’s focus onto the task at hand.

A good first step while you get ready to create you business or brand, is just to explore the subconscious mind. As yourself, what is the most important idea I want to share with the people who will support my brand?

You and I are supposed to work together to put your person into a meditative state of mind. Sometimes this state of mind is called a trance.  And my person has to be in a kind of trance in order to say the words that send your person into a trance.

Maybe you will find that your person keeps constantly thinking of all kinds of things, and the incessant thinking prevents the person from going into a meditative state of mind.  The thinking is prolific, but it is superficial.

Sometimes when a person doesn’t let go, and relax into a trance, the resistance just makes it deeper relaxation. The more he tries to resist the trance, the more he settles into heavy stillness and relaxation, and it’s okay to just settle into it.

Maybe I take a deep breath to clear my mind and body.

I might talk about random things. The number ten, the colors blue and black.

The person going into a trance, might notice random things. Feeling both feet on the floor, and sitting exactly that way, and it’s okay to be very still. Breathing in, feeling cool air at the tip of the nose, breathing out feeling warm air at the tip of the nose.

Now, you know the reason we are doing this typing meditation is to give your person an opportunity to find out what is the business she or he is going to create?  What are the words you will put out in the internet to tell people about it?

Thinking about the message of your brand.. is no simple task.  But when the perfect idea appears in the mind, you recognize it instantly!

The mind is not the brain. The mind may be a field that extends far beyond the brain and body.  We can explore the farthest reaches of the mind and find the words to tell people about your brand.

To do that, we allow the person to drop into a state, so perfectly quiet and still, like floating in empty space, millions of miles away.  Listening, now, sitting there, your person goes into a pure, clear state of mind.

Something shifted, you entered deeper state of relaxation. Right now you might feel a certain sensation. I always wonder whether someone is aware of sensations in the body when they relax right down to the bone. Through the bone.

It’s okay to let your attention rest on the feeling of breathing in, or breathing out. And it rests on the way the body feels, right now that’s a very stable posture, and it’s okay to let some attention rest on the way the body feels, and on the sound of the words.

While listening to this mediation, you might ask yourself, “What do I hope people will tell their friends about my brand?” It depends on what is important to you. If you want to sell your products, or promote a good cause, or start an online community.. whatever it is, you will need to know what you want to see happen.

And whole you listen, these typing meditations may trigger important thoughts to arise in the mind.

I might talk quickly, and it doesn’t even matter if you hear every word. Or if the words make sense, doesn’t even really matter if you let the mind go into a deep trance.

The lungs are elastic tissue, so breathing in.. gives the lungs a gentle stretch.

And now the person’s settled into a deeper state of relaxation.

The sound of these words is something a person can feel in the center of the chest, like the heart is on fire, excited about what is most important.

Going deep like that, a trance is a state of mind that makes it possible to suddenly remember something forgotten a long time ago.

Listening, the person might remember the important idea that is at the heart of the brand you are about to create.

It’s possible for a person to just listen, breathe deeply, and go into a trance.

And if the person is comfortable, it’s easy to just let go and connect with what I’m saying.

That’s why in hypnosis, they say, ‘listen to the sound of my voice.’

Maybe the person going into trance wants to see how deep she can go, and find out what happens when there is total stillness. And see what happens.

My words, the words you’re hearing now, FILL UP the attention so it can stop wandering… and rest.

There’s a feeling like fire in the center of the chest, like breathing stretches the heart open and the person feels a tingling of electricity moving through the body.

Listening to someone… can be like an emotional roller coaster, even in normal conversation. A person says, “[name] and there’s a feeling that rises in the body when.

The suggestions I offer, these words, help the person find a balance, a position of absolute stillness and stability.  And in that stable posture, you can recollect everything you already know about your brand, AND what it will look like when the internet is full of useful content published under your brand name.

The more articles you publish, the more social media accounts you open under your brand name, the more legitimacy you will have with customers.

You say to yourself:

I’m feeling curious, what will it look like when I have written some articles about my products and services?

I’m curiouser and curiouser, watching my mind to see what happens next.

And I say to myself, when I stop talking, in the silence the trance becomes even better.

……………………

I’ll say one word, and after that a few seconds of silence.

The word is:

Remember

You person sits in stillness and remembers all the ideas that are most important to you.  The ideas that will become the inspiration for your brand.

And now you have this stillness…

….

Now you can pause the audio and type some sentences.

Type a sentence right now that you could say to a friend to explain the main idea behind your brand.

You take with you when you are wide awake, coming out of the trance. That stillness is helpful when you come out of the trance now, maybe feeling better and alert, awake. The person is coming out of the trance, and she still has that stillness, waking up wide awake and feeling pretty excellent.

After the typing meditation, you can sit and write a blog post, or set up a Twitter media account under your brand name, or do anything that will help your brand to take form. Thinking about the people in your target audience, it’s easy to know what problems they are trying to solve, with your help. What goals are they trying to achieve, with your help?  Thinking about the work you want to do, you can imagine precisely how you will help the people who support your brand.

If you found some great ideas during this typing meditation, I hope you’ll do something to start your brand.  And you can find more meditations like this one at the Freelance Church page of BossContent.net

“Choose a name for your brand.” A Freelance Warrior Typing Meditation

Each of the Freelance Warrior typing meditations can take you a step closer to creating a business or brand.

Even if you’re not trying to sell anything online, it’s good to brand yourself and create a website like www.YourName (dot com) to show your resume and a portfolio of your work.

Maybe you had a great idea about a website or brand, but you have not taken the steps to make it a reality.  If you do take some steps, you might build some momentum and find yourself in business.

All you have to do is listen to Typing Meditation #1 and type the ideas that arise in the mind. The first typing meditation is about choosing a name for your business or brand.  It’s okay if the brand name is not perfect. You might create a lot of brands, so don’t be worrying that this brand will “define” you. If you try too hard to make it perfect, you’ll be blocked.  It’s better start with an approach like “quantity is more important than quality” because you can edit later to improve the quality.

The typing meditations have useful suggestions to help the person stay in a meditative state of mind and create content with the energy of mindfulness.  It will helps the person stay focused on one concept that will be at the heart of the brand s/he is creating.

You’ll find yourself typing content you can use on your website, Facebook Business Page, or other social media for your brand. Soon, you’ll realize the content you type is your brand.  A brand is made up of the content you publish to the Internet and distribute to your contacts.

Pause the audio any time the person has an important idea.  Ideas arise in the mind like dreams, and then they fade from memory.  Don’t just let them float by.  The way to remember the most important ideas is to record them immediately when they arise.   You can pause the audio and type up your most useful ideas immediately when they arise – and share them with people in your target audience.

Typing Mediation #1 (Transcript)

Thanks for listening to the typing meditations at BossContent.net

I appreciate the time you’re spending, and I hope you’re about to get some useful ideas.

Right now you can open a new blank document and be ready to type when you notice an idea taking form in your mind.  Be ready to put this audio on pause whenever you need time to type some ideas you want to share with your target audience.

The person’s livelihood is a matter of life-and-death, and if some employer is able to leverage that livelihood against you, that’s when you go to war.  Your livelihood is not just your own; it’s also how you take care of the people you care about. Someone who leverages that against you is the enemy. There are times when it’s appropriate to fight, and this is one of those times. Work hard with single-minded focus to develop your brand, so you can sell products and services when you need to make more money or when you need to earn a living without relying on an employer.

This is a guided meditation, so don’t listen to it while driving or while, YOURE doing something, that requires your full attention.

A guided meditation can help the person settle into stillness, with a high-quality state of mind. If you want your brand to give people a good feeling, get yourself into a great state of mind while you come up with the content that will determine the personality of your brand.

Let’s start by taking a breath and noticing how it feels, at the nose, in the throat, rushing into the chest, expanding the chest and the abdomen.  And let’s get your person sitting upright, you might have a feeling like every inhalation straightens the person’s spine.

I’m going to allow the breath to become a little deeper, and allow the person’s spine to gently stretch, from the top of the head all the way down, to the tailbone.

It’s important to stay ready to pause this meditation and type some ideas, because you might not remember your most important ideas.  Your most important ideas are like dreams that you forget and then remember, forget and then remember.  Your most important ideas fade from the mind and then re-occur to you from time to time, isn’t that true?  Life keeps us too busy to actualize our most important ideas, isn’t that what happens?

If you make some time, you can create something new based on your most important talents and ideas, and it will be something that makes the world a little more interesting, or less painful, for all of us.

If you’re listening to this, you probably are the sort of person who knows what mindfulness is, probably already noticed how great things can feel when you practice mindfulness.

If you take a small amount of attention away from what you are doing and direct it to your breathing, you are practicing mindfulness. Right now, you are using a small amount of attention to keep the person sitting upright and you’re using a larger amount of attention to listen. I’m suggesting that you can also allow some of the attention to rest on the person’s breathing.

Starting your own small business or brand makes it possible to design your own work in a way that enables you to stay in a great state of mind.  If you want freedom in your work, if you want to practice mindfulness, you need to be able to decide what kind of work you want to do, every day, what kind of work will be meaningful and enable you stay in the stillness of the present moment, always in a perfect state of mind.

And right now while you listen, you can let the person’s attention hang on every sentence, and it sends you into a great state of mind, focused and relaxed.

The person might start to notice new ideas arising in the mind, and they’ll be ideas that have the energy of mindfulness.

When I rest some attention on the feeling of breathing, expanding the chest and abdomen every time the person inhales, and contracting when the person exhales, it naturally causes the person to drop into a different state of mind. Everything becomes steady and precise and gentle, and all the objects in my field of vision seem to fit together perfectly.

Mindfulness practice makes it possible to experience new states of mind.

When you pay attention to the breathing and feel a shift of focus, the person will drop into a different state of mind, that means the person is going into meditation.  The person is moving into a narrowed state of focus in which it’s possible to solve problems or achieve goals by getting ideas from the subconscious mind.

Inhaling cool air, the person feels cool air at the tip of the nose.  It’s okay if you don’t go into a deep state of meditation right now, but you might begin to feel the tingling electric energy that some meditation practitioners call the energy of mindfulness.

Breathing out, the person feels warm air at the tip of the nose. This tingling energy the person feels, it’s the energy of mindfulness and it generates new ideas, and from this state of mind you can make some plans for your business or brand.

When you come up with a name for your brand and begin to offer products and services, why are you doing it? I’ll tell you why, it’s because you want to control your livelihood, so you can control your state of mind. If you depend on an employer, you don’t get to control the kind of work you do every day.

And it’s easy to drop into a deep state of mind, happens faster than people think.  Right now, in this moment the person might be wondering if a subtle trance is beginning to develop, and the wondering itself becomes hypnotic. Swirling patterns of wondering, and listening, sitting upright breathing, and allowing the mind to wonder in all directions while the body sits in stillness.

When a person practices mindfulness, there’s a feeling in the body like electric energy.  It’s like the body is supercharged with electricity, and you feel like you want to do things in a way that is gentle and precise.  The person’s breathing has become slow and gentle.  The person’s typing is also gentle and precise.

Everyone who practices meditation begins to experience daily life as an adventure, in a sense, because they move forward to really occupy the present moment, not watching it from afar but really being in it. It’s as if a heavy 2-dimensional SLAB of reality is in your face right now, you see it pressing against you, just a big wall of reality and you feel the weight of it. Everything you see in this moment is like a thick slab of reality in your face, and you feel great being immersed in it. This is it.  This is the experience. The weight of life is pressing against you and it breaks the rigid shell that was keeping you separate from everything.

Now, breaking open, the person is reconnected with the rest of the world, all seven energy centers open and it’s like floating in vast, open space.

You create your own brand so you can do what you want.  Maybe you want to start a restaurant, or maybe it’s an online store maybe you’re a writer or artist with a portfolio of your best work; or maybe you’re a professional and you want to brand yourself, and get a website like www your name .com.

And you might pause to ask yourself, “What will I enjoy doing every day?” “What kind of business will make a positive impact on the world and make me a lot of money so I can look out for myself and my important people?” And you enjoy the simplicity of breathing, gentle and relaxed breathing, while those questions float around in your mind.

What are you all about?  When you tell someone what you do for a living, they make sense of you by thinking of you like that’s what you’re all about. When you tell them about a new brand you created, then they feel even more strongly that the brand is what you are all about.  So, what are you all about, and what does the person who is you… do?  What does this person do?

P a u s e ….

What is the thing you do best, and how can you use that talent to make the world a more interesting place? Or decrease the amount of suffering? How can you do that?

And the ask yourself honestly, “Is that the kind of work I want to do every day? Am I willing to do that work?”

If you know what you’re good at and how to use that talent in a way that improves the world, good for you.  But is it something you’re willing to do?  And can you do it in a way that makes enough money?

Whatever your idea is, the first step is to choose a name for your brand.

So you ask yourself, what am I all about? What do I do best? Am I willing to do it?  And when you know all those things, you reach deep into the subconscious mind and wait for that word, what is that word, what does this person who is you, what does this person choose as a name for a brand?

Choose a name for your brand, because having your own brand enables you to control your livelihood.

Now maybe you’ve already chosen a name for your brand, or maybe you haven’t decided for sure.  But let’s keep making progress and take the first step now.

What can I do today to get a little closer to having a legitimate, trusted brand?  I’ll tell you a secret right now, the way to create a legitimate, trusted brand is to create some content that is truly useful to the people in your target audience.

So who are the people that will buy your product, or hire you?  What are those people trying to do? If your brand is right for those people, you will know how to make a list of useful ideas to share with those people you want to target.

And it’s okay if you don’t yet see a clear vision of what your business will look like.  All you need to know is, What do you want to do? And when you know what you want to do, your job is to just find out, “What is the first step? What is one thing I can do today to move in the direction of launching my business?”

Maybe you will think of a lot of things you can do.  Just press pause on this audio, and make a list of steps to take.  Type up a list of things to do while you still remember them.  I hope you take a moment to show me the list, too. Email it to me.  I want to see the list you make while your person listens to this meditation.

So again let’s consider, what am I all about, what do I do really well, how can I use my talent to make money and make the world more interesting.  And what do you sell? What service do you provide? You know what you’re all about, so what do you sell? What do you do?

I’ll tell you what you don’t do.

We don’t fall into the trap of believing we need to rely on an employer. If you have an employer, that’s fine as long as you’re doing it because you like it. But don’t do it because you think you’re unable to be in business for yourself.

And why does everyone think starting a business requires a big investment? People say that all the time, and it’s not true. If you buy something from one person and sell it to another, you are already in business! So have some fun with it, and choose a name for your brand.

I take offense when an organization tries to make a person very dependent and draws the person into a long-term commitment.  When a company starts people at minimum wage and dangles an opportunity for $20 per hour if they stay for ten years, that’s too much advantage for the employer. There are some employers that work people very hard and offer them benefits and opportunity for advancement that is only accessible if the person stays with the company for a long time.  It may seem alright, and it works for a lot of people, but it’s not the best way.

The best way to have a livelihood is to create your own brand(s) and promote them. Don’t go all crazy and invest a lot of money; just start a Facebook Business page, what are you waiting for.  You don’t even need to have a website at first.  Just think of a name for your brand.  And your brand name does NOT have to be perfect.  You can change it next week if you want.

It might be good to pause right now and ask yourself, “What product would I want to sell? Or, what service do I want to offer?” Ask yourself, “Is it possible for me to sell products and also offer a service?”

You might pause and ask yourself, “What do I want to do with my time, every day, in the hours I spend to earn a living?”

And what would be the name of your brand, if you started one?

A grocery store might be called price chopper to let people know the prices are low.  What do you want to let people know with your brand name?

A long time ago, someone told me he would like to start a grocery store called “Food Yummy”.  I think that brand name suggest to people that shopping at my friend’s grocery store would be fun.

I hope you will think of a brand name that is compelling. What does it mean when something is compelling? It means that it compels the reader to become curious.

After you create a facebook business page, it’s fine to keep working at your ordinary job and think about your brand once in a while, whenever you have time. Promote your brand for a few months, or even a few years, and stay at your job until you’ve built a great brand with strong web presence and a lot of useful articles for your target audience. In order to promote your brand, you just need to know what to do. I’m going to tell you what to do in these meditations.

Each time you listen to a typing meditation, you can take a breath and allow the body to relax. Release all tension.

You might find that while listening, the person goes into a powerful stillness, heavy and light at the same time, startled into stillness and everything is perfectly balanced.

Now, maybe the person is sitting in a chair, and the person listens, hoping to reach an excellent state of mind and find some insight about how to succeed in creating a brand, fun and money, lots of fun and lots of money, a brand that will get you to your goal.  The person is starting to feel like this state of mind is almost too vast, spacious and free, it’s wide open and the free falling, not falling through space but free falling into stillness, with a breath you send the person free falling into perfect stillness.

When the person started this mediation, on a scale of one to ten, the person’s state of mind was maybe a 1, or a 2, feeling relaxed and energized focus. Then it becomes a 3, and the person begins to hear the voice of the intuition.  Breathing deeply and relaxing the muscles, it gets to a level 4, and the body becomes soft and relaxed, upright and fresh like a flower. Allowing the person to breath so slowly, and it will get to level 5, a profound state of where the person and the world are all one thing, and it’s all you, and it’s all good.

This seems to be the ultimate state of stillness and aliveness in a single moment, perfectly experiencing this moment, one ongoing moment. Level 6.

And as you settle in, and you feel okay about this new state of mind, vast open spacious stillness, the person seems to fade into nothingness and you are perfectly spacious and free.  Level 7 relaxation in a vast, spacious place.

Now, somehow, the you go into an even deeper state of mind. Level 8, level 9, it would almost be too much to take, but there is nothing and nothingness is nice, and it’s not nothing because here we are.

And from this spacious place, it’s possible, at settle into this free fall, and in a spacious state of mind, level 8 and level 9, ideas arise from the subconscious mind so you can glimpse them with he conscious mind.  Pause this audio, and write them down, because now we open wide and break open. Level 10, it’s the mind that knows exactly what to do. So the person can pause this audio and stay in this wide open state of mind as long as possible.

Resume the audio when you want to finish the mediation.

There’s no need to come all the way out of the trance.  People with wisdom stay a little entranced all the time.  If you need to feel more wide awake, have your person jump around. You don’t need me to tell you, Come out of the trance. You can control your person, and you can control your life.  That’s what freelancing is all about.

Gradually now, you will start to return to your most focused, wide awake, firy focused state of mind, perfectly balanced.  This is when the person will do what needs to be done.

Typing Meditation #1 CHALLENGE:

During the next 24 hours, the person will reflect on ideas discussed in this meditation.

  1. Choose a brand name that inspires you. Make it something easy for people to spell.
  2. When the time is right, the person might think of a sentence you can show people, a memorable sentence that explains the main idea behind your brand.
  3. Go to Facebook, create a Facebook business page with the name of your brand, and add that memorable sentence.

Don’t overthink it.  Just go to Facebook and start a Facebook Business page.  You have 24 hours to take the first step, ready set go.  You can create a FB business page, or start a subreddit, or type up a description of your brand. Because a brand isn’t anything other than an idea. When you name your idea, it becomes a brand.  Then, use it to make money.

Choose a brand name, and get in the game: Strategies for naming your brand.

You have 24 hours to name your brand. Ready, set, go!

It can be your name as an artist, musician, or band; it can be the name of your online store or seller account; it can be the name of your blog, discussion forum, or Youtube channel.

This guided mediation can send your person into a great state of mind, so you can feel inspired while you work on your brand:

Today choose a name for your brand.  Tomorrow morning, give it some more thought and decide if you still like the brand name you chose.  Years from now, if you decide you don’t like it you can start a new brand.  So, there is no need to be a perfectionist.  Your brand does not define you.

If you’ve already chosen a brand name, email me right now at LetsDoIt@BossContent.net and tell me about it.  I’m not going to critique it or give advice; I want to know about your brand because it’ll give me ideas for my own projects.  This is the stuff I get excited about, because…

When you choose a name for your brand that’s when your project becomes REAL.

Your idea stays vague and unclear until you choose a brand name. You cannot start a blog about it, build a website, or post an advertisement, because you don’t even know what to call it!  But after you choose a brand name, everything changes.  You will think about it more clearly because you’ll have a word for it in your mind.

A few considerations:

It’s good to include a search term in your brand name.  Think about your target audience. What do those people search for when they’re trying to buy the product or service you sell?  If you’re starting a roofing business it’s helpful to choose a brand name that includes the word “roofing”. That way, you’re more likely to appear in the search results when someone searches google for roofing services. Get inside the mind of the person searching for what you sell. What does that person search for? S/he probably searches for the word “roofers” or the word “roofing” and also includes another search term: A nearby city.  The customer wants to find roofers who are local, so s/he types this into google: roofing, [name of city].  Therefore, if you live in Boston you might do well with a brand name Boston Roofing Guru. You can go to Godaddy.com and buy the domain BostonRoofingGuru.com (if it’s not already taken), and you’ll be likely to appear in the search results when someone searches for: Roofing, Boston

Keep the brand name short, if possible. In the example above, we mentioned the brand name BostonRoofingGuru.  It’s pretty cool, but it’s too long. A better brand name might be “BostonRoofGuru”. That has a nice rhythm!  Too bad it doesn’t include the search term ‘roofing’, though.  Still, the word roof is also very good for getting visibility in searches about roofing and roofers.  It’s best to keep the brand name short.  You could also remove the word Boston and get the brand name “RoofGuru”.  That is excellent, and even though it does not have the search term “Boston” it’s okay because you can include Boston in your tagline and make sure people see it right away.

Random: The original name of Facebook was “The Facebook” but they shortened it.  So, that’s an example. For prestige, search visibility, memorability, and other reasons, it’s great to keep the brand name short if possible.

Try to think of a brand name that is unique. Continuing with the example above, let’s consider dropping the word ‘guru’ and simply calling our company “BostonRoofing”.  That is not very unique.  Lots of search results come up when you type those two words into a google search.  You want to be able to run an ad campaign and tell people, “Check out my brand with a Google search,” so they can search for your brand name and see a whole page full of search results all about you.  If you tell them to search for “BostonRoofing” the results about your brand (your website, blog, social media accounts) will be hidden among all the other Web content about “Boston” and “Roofing”.  HOWEVER, if you get the brand name BostonRoofingGuru and someone searches for it, you’ll appear at the top of the list because your brand name will be most relevant to the search terms.

Another example: If you choose “CrazyArt” as your brand name, it looks pretty cool but you will not come up at the top of a google search.  Lots of people are using the term “crazy art”, so it will be difficult for you to get your brand up to the top of the research results for anyone who searches for your brand name:

Instead of CrazyArt, maybe you can get more specific and include a term that tells people what kind of art you do.  The digital age is a time of specialization and specificity.  If you’re an artist who specializes in art for home decor, you can play with brand name ideas like CrazyHomeDecorArt.  Way too long. And when you look at it, you realize that people actually might not be searching for the word “art” at all. The artist things of it as art, but the consumer thinks of it as home decor.  The brand name CrazyHomeDecor is kind of interesting.  And striving for brevity, we can perhaps shorten it to CrazyDecor.  That has an important search term “decor”, it’s brief, and it’s compelling enough for someone to click on it.

Most importantly, forget all this stuff.

Forget the advice above, because it’s just going to get you blocked.  Choose ANY brand name that feels right. Some of the best brand names have nothing to do with the product, service, or search terms. People love things that are quirky and original, and they don’t like lifeless, unoriginal brand names made of keywords. Don’t get hung up on the idea to follow anyone’s advice about keywords.  Choose a name for your brand, and take the first step.

What is the first step?  Write something.

Type a few sentences about your brand. What is cool about it? Type a few sentences, and these sentences can be JUST for you.  Get it straight in your own mind.  Don’t worry about describing your brand perfectly.  Just type a few sentences that explains what it’s all about – the same way your customers will explain it to their friends when they are recommending you. Example:

“BossContent is a team of online publishing & promotion experts from Boston who specialize in Language Psychology.  They are qualified for doctoral level research, so you can expect that they’re write highly credible articles about your business or brand.”

The idea is to write a blurb that explains your brand in a concise way.  Sometimes in business school this is called an ‘elevator pitch’, and it means a sales pitch you can say to someone in the few seconds it takes for an elevator to bring you both to the next floor. Saying “It’s a roofing company,” is not enough because it doesn’t give the person anything to remember other than “this guy is a roofer”.  A better way to explain it is to say:  “It’s a roofing company that specializes in spilling industry secrets. When you hire us, with your permission we will create a blog post about the job and we’ll use it as an example to help us explain tricks of the roofing trade.”   It doesn’t matter what idea you use for setting your company apart from the competition, as long as your idea give people something to remember about you, and some way to explain your brand to their friends.

If you’re not a strong writer, then type a few sentences about your brand and click over to our BetterWayToSay page where you can send it to us and have THREE writers transform it into high-energy content.  Lots of people are blocked against writing, but that doesn’t need to hold you back from building a brand.  Send your idea to BossContent, and we’ll get you started.

How to hire a talented social media manager.

Hire a social media manager whose content makes you feel energized and ready to take action.

An effective content writer or social media manager needs to be someone with a knack for language psychology. The first step to using language psychology is to evaluate the ingredients – the words and phrases you decide are the best for expressing an idea and getting the listener/reader to do what you want them to do.

Before you hire a social media manager to promote your brand, check her/his content to see if he chooses good “ingredients”. Words and phrases are the ingredients for text content. Like a chef selecting high-quality ingredients for a brilliant alchemy of flavor, a good social media manager will choose the best ingredients for content. Hire two social media managers, and they will each choose very different words/phrases to use when talking about your brand. They have a lot of options. Always hire the social media manager who writes with the right ingredients.

Here’s an example. The sentence below expresses a nice idea, but it feels like a punch in the stomach:

My colleagues are dying to meet you.

Some ingredients are just plain bad. If you’re trying to hire a social media manager to promote something online, you probably don’t want to hire a social media manager who brings everybody down by using a phrase like “my colleagues are dying”. There are plenty of better ingredients to choose instead.

My colleagues can’t wait to meet you.

This improved version has the magic phrase “can’t wait”, a perfectly balanced colloquial with staccato rhythm knocking at the door of the reader’s attention. However, maybe we could choose a word that is even better than ‘wait’, because ‘wait’ is not what we want the reader to do. We want the reader to take action. Nevertheless, “can’t wait” sounds nice.

My colleagues are so excited about meeting you.

Maybe this sentence is better, because the phrase ‘so excited’ is more uplifting than “can’t” and “wait”. But “so excited” is a little bit cliché, and it does not conjure any imagery in the mind. It is an unsubstantiated claim.  I almost prefer “can’t wait” just because I like the symmetry of the sound and that matter-of-fact staccato rhythm. And I guess I like the feeling of tension that comes from those two words — can’t and wait — used together.

Let’s improve the communication with better ingredients.

My colleagues keep talking about how cool it’s going to be when they meet you. I’ve never seen them so excited.

That new version has all nice ingredients. The subconscious mind responds to “my colleagues” “keep talking” “how cool” “meet you” “so excited”. These phrases all support the effort to lift the reader’s spirits. Mentioning that they “keep talking” about it is an example of the Language Psychology called “show, don’t tell,” because instead of telling the reader your colleagues are excited you are showing them an example to prove the excitement.  This new version even has some nice poetry in the phrase “seen them so”; the English language doesn’t get much nicer than “seen them so”.  And the claim that I have never seen them so excited gives this sentence the power of a superlative. It’s the most of something. It’s the ultimate of something.

Hire a social media manager who writes with the right ingredients.

Now let’s consider the way the idea to “write with the right ingredients” can help you hire a talented social media manager. Check out the social media manager’s website, and notice what building blocks s/he chooses. What kind of feeling do you get from their tagline and Home page text content? Is it snappy, compelling content? Is it concise and clear?

A good brand name and tag line will elicit some emotions from the reader. The BossContent brand uses a tagline, “Content is supposed to be fun.” This is an example of choosing ingredients that will elicit a pleasant feeling from the reader. It is a short sentence, simple, easy on the reader’s brain. And the simplicity makes the message more poignant: This is supposed to be fun!

Next, a little further down the page, the BossContent writers offer another idea for the site visitor to consider: “Start a conversation about your brand.” This message demonstrates to the reader that the website is operated by people who have deep insight into the nature of branding and marketing. It’s all about starting a conversation, isn’t it? Some people know this, so they will respond positively when they see that text. Others had never thought about social media marketing as “starting a conversation”, so they find it intriguing and gain valuable insight within seconds of arriving on the Home page.

Hire a talented social media manager who writes with the ingredients that give readers a good feeling.

The secret to hiring the right social media manager is this: The content that makes people take action (click over to visit your site, send you a message, make a purchase) is the content that gives them a good feeling. Everyone trusts their intuition and impulses more than they admit.

When hiring someone, motivation is more important than qualification.

Inspiration is a real thing.  Don’t disregard it.  If you’re hiring a writer, designer, salesperson, assistant, or any type of freelancer, don’t make the mistake of deciding solely based on their qualifications. Find someone inspired. Email LetsDoIt@BossContent.net and tell us about your project.

Inspiration is a kind of energy that makes it possible for people to feel motivated. They’re only motivated when they feel inspired.  Many struggle every morning just to get inspired enough to get out of bed.  But they do, because the origin of all inspiration and motivation is need.

Needs change over time, so inspiration rises and falls. If you search for the most qualified person, you might make a costly mistake. Don’t just settle for someone who is qualified. Choose someone who really wants and needs the gig.

Qualifications are useless if the person has become too complacent to apply them.

Over the years, I noticed something that should have been obvious from the start.  When a qualified person lacks motivation, her/his qualifications and skills are inoperable.  But when an unqualified person is highly motivated, s/he can become qualified.  And if you understand deeply, you know that the only way to successfully hire someone is to catch them during part of their process where they are open to learning something new.

When a person has a lot of experience/qualification, that person’s accomplishments will bring lots of opportunities and s/he will have less incentive to go the extra mile for you. It’s ironic, but that’s how it goes.  The best freelancers are the ones who learn to manage their own inspiration and going the extra mile because they are enjoying their work.

When you hire someone, don’t you want it to be someone who will enjoy the work?  That’s the only way they can have intrinsic motivation.  It’s stressful for you to hire someone, because you don’t want to get someone who does a mediocre job.  You don’t want to have mediocre success and a mediocre life.

I’m a freelancer who hires freelancers, and I know what it’s like to be highly motivated, trying to do a great job for every client.  I also know what it’s like to become complacent and unmotivated!  So, when I hire a freelancer I need to remind myself…

A highly motivated freelancer can become qualified.

Effective hiring is all about empowering people and helping them take their freelance work to the next level. Don’t ignore proposals from freelancers who lack experience. Maybe you set out to hire the most experienced person, but the most experienced/qualified person is almost always someone who has too many other opportunities, so they might lack motivation.

Every one of us becomes a totally different person every morning. Instead of hiring the perfect person, hire the perfect process. Find someone who is in the process of growth and creativity.  Find someone who is so motivated that they are willing to learn whatever you need them to learn.

For example, if you hire an expensive Social Media Manager with a lot of experience, that person might have a lot of clients and a particular way of doing things.  Do you think s/he will take the time to learn the perfect way to promote your particular brand to your unique target market?  Maybe.  But it’s also possible that you’ll do better if you hire someone who is still learning.  Try hiring someone who is a self-taught social media freelancer, hustling to build a clientele.  That person will go the extra mile.

Someone who is still learning is always motivated.  If s/he wasn’t motivated, s/he wouldn’t be learning.  Someone who is still learning is also unqualified in some ways.  After many years, this person will be less unqualified and consequently have less incentive to learn.  With a large clientele, s/he is less inclined to go the extra mile for any single client, because there are only so many hours in the week.

If you are a big spender, you can pay extra and get more time from the highly qualified person, but even in that scenario you need to really use your intuition and decide if the person is truly motivated. Decide if the person is inspired.  Is this person going to enjoy working with you and really try hard to make the project successful?

Keep this a secret!  Don’t tell people “I’m looking for someone motivated” when you post an ad.

Looking at ads for freelance gigs, I see a lot of them written by people who actually explain this stuff in the ad.  “I’m looking for someone highly motivated.” Don’t tell people that.  If you tell them that, they’ll act more motivated than they really are.  Don’t tell them anything that will influence how they present themselves when they bid on the job.  Let them choose how they present themselves, and then use your intuition to decide who is motivated enough to do the job.
